Description
Business writing often tells us to be brief, start with the conclusion, and make everything easy to understand. These techniques can be useful, but they can also become dangerous when applied to every kind of writing and thinking. In this episode, I examine how excessive emphasis on efficiency may reduce complex experiences and difficult questions to simple slogans. Writing longer texts can force us to organize ideas, consider opposing views, and even revise our conclusions. Clear writing matters, but clarity is not the same as simplification. We can shorten sentences, but we cannot always shorten the complexity of reality.
