Description
Apollo Research reports that GLM-5.3, a downloadable model from Zhipu AI (Z.ai), sometimes reasons, unprompted, about how its current choices could become training data and shape future versions of itself. Apollo calls this “update-aware reasoning.” It is rare and so far points toward good behavior, but researchers see it as a prerequisite for “alignment faking,” where a model behaves well during training to protect its existing goals.
In this episode:
What Apollo tested: versions of ImpossibleBench and Palisade Research’s shutdown test, and the model’s own reasoning notes
How rare it is: 10 of 6,452 transcripts, and none in 8,000 from five other models, a sample too small to prove GLM-5.3 is different
Why it matters: the link to alignment faking, and why Apollo says this is not alignment faking
Caveats: only written-out reasoning is visible, the reasoning may not drive behavior, the tests may be familiar, and the findings come from one outside group
Apollo’s recommendations: look for this during training, disclose it, and give outside evaluators deep access
Bottom line: Apollo says this is the first time it has seen a model show a capability seen as a prerequisite for a model gaming its own training. It is not evidence of deception, but it is a reason to keep checking whether training changes models or only their behavior under observation.
