Description
You’re in your 30s you, you feel great, and your doctor wants to talk about your cholesterol and blood pressure. Isn’t heart disease something to worry about later?
Heart attacks often happen later in life, but the process that leads to many of them can begin decades earlier.
In this episode of the Daily Brief, Dr. Albert Takem explains why cardiovascular prevention matters even when you are young and healthy, how risk builds over time, and why the best time to act is before disease has had 30 years to develop.
Atherosclerosis, the buildup of cholesterol-containing plaque in the walls of the arteries, does not suddenly begin at 65. LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney disease, genetics, obesity, and metabolic disease each add to the overall burden over the years. That is why a younger adult can have a low 10-year risk estimate and still carry risk factors that matter over a lifetime.
Family history can change the conversation. A very high LDL, especially with heart attacks or strokes at young ages in the family, can point to an inherited condition such as familial hypercholesterolemia. Lifestyle matters enormously, but when someone eats well, stays active, and still has very high LDL, the biology may be telling us something else, and that deserves evaluation rather than years of trying to fix a genetic problem with diet alone.
