Description
Russell Brand gave evidence for more than four hours at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, denying each of the seven charges in turn and telling jurors that consent is “fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed more important than sex itself.” He said the 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches programme had a devastating effect, that he could not find a single friend or former colleague willing to give evidence for him, and that he had been barred from staying with his son after the boy’s open-heart surgery. He admitted he had been wrong to use his fame in pursuit of sex and had dedicated much of his life to what he called beyond reckless philandering and idiocy. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC accused him of staying silent in police interviews so he could forge an account around the evidence; Brand said he had been doing his best to participate, and that “since these events occurred there’s been escalating recollection.” Put to him that he was guilty, he replied that not guilty is his plea in every single case. Also: Oren, Alon and Tal Alexander were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in Manhattan. And Dr. William Smock told a Boston jury that Sandra Birchmore was the victim of a homicidal act. Garret Fisher reports.
