Is autointoxication a real thing?

Description

Over the years, several dozen cases of "autointoxication," also called "auto brewery syndrome," i.e., people who are intoxicated but deny indulging in any alcoholic beverages, have been documented. Formal testing of these people more recently has indeed revealed disruption of the gastrointestinal microbiome with overgrowth of alcohol-producing bacterial and fungal species. The situation is also remedied by addressing the bacterial and fungal overgrowth, confirming a cause-effect relationship.  Something to consider, however: If it's possible to become intoxicated from a disrupted GI microbiome, could lesser degrees of alcohol that cause, for example, impaired judgement, reduced impulse control, impaired memory, etc. also occur? If so, how can you identify and correct this situation?
