ADHD and OCD: Tab Hoarding

OCT 20, 202612 MIN

Description

Closing a single browser tab can feel like you’re deleting a part of your brain. If that sounds dramatic but also completely familiar, I get into why it happens and what it can tell you about ADHD, OCD, and the way your mind handles uncertainty. I start with the ADHD side: open tabs as an “external working memory” system. When you don’t trust your brain to hold onto an article, a purchase idea, a calendar task, or a random question, your browser becomes the reminder. Add ADHD’s sensitivity to novelty and interest, and each open tab becomes a future possibility you don’t want to shut down yet. The problem is that what begins as a helpful coping strategy can slowly turn into digital clutter and executive function overload, where finding the right tab becomes its own exhausting task. Then we shift into the OCD lens, where the issue isn’t always interest, it’s certainty. “What if I need this later?” can turn tab closing into a decision that feels urgent, high-stakes, and impossible to resolve. I talk about how the same habit can come from different drivers, how ADHD and OCD can stack on top of each other, and why it’s not always obvious which one is “in the driver’s seat” in the moment. I wrap with practical next steps: consider alternate external systems like bookmarks or a notes app, and try a tiny experiment to build uncertainty tolerance by closing just one tab and observing what your brain does next.
