Did Richard the Lionheart Assassinate The Crusader King Of Jerusalem?
In 1191 Conrad I, the new Crusader King of Jerusalem, was struck down in the open streets of Tyre by paid assassins. There was one chief suspect for the hit: Richard I, King of England. We know Richard the Lionheart as a warrior king who left his kingdom to recapture Jerusalem, as it told in many versions of the Robin Hood legend. But Richard's time in the Holy Land wasn’t just spent in battle. He was also embroiled in the brutal politics between the Crusaders, the Templars and the Assassins. Dr Steve Tibble, author of Assassins and Templars: A Battle In Myth And Blood helps Matt Lewis shed light on Richard the Lionheart’s encounters with the notorious Assassins. Was Richard their enemy, or their secret ally against other Crusaders? Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. Watch this episode on Youtube.
