A king who understood Rome's price was sold by the one man he trusted most
In this episode, we follow Jugurtha from a court outsider to a commander who learned Rome's inner workings and used bribery as policy. We trace the moments that taught him how to buy influence, the rivalries that followed Micipsa's death, and the decisions that pushed Numidia toward open conflict - but what happens when your knowledge becomes your vulnerability?
Person: Jugurtha
Location: Numidia; Tullianum (Rome)
Date: 104 BCE (imprisonment); born circa 160 BCE
Event: Division of Numidia after Micipsa's death
Person: Adherbal
- Jugurtha trained at court as Mastanabal's illegitimate son and learned to win status by performance rather than inheritance.
- During the siege of Numantia (c.134 BCE) Jugurtha watched Roman commanders, met Gaius Marius, and mapped who in Rome could be influenced.
- Scipio Aemilianus warned Jugurtha against buying friendships, yet Jugurtha returned home knowing how Senate factions and verdicts could be purchased.
- After Micipsa's death in 118 BCE the kingdom was split among Adherbal, Hiempsal and Jugurtha, a partition overseen by Roman commissioners accused of taking bribes.
- Jugurtha arranged Hiempsal's murder by bribing guards, then used bribery and military moves to attempt to remove Adherbal and seize the whole kingdom.
