Publisher's Summary:
After losing her high-octane job as an entertainment blogger, Noelle Hancock was lost. About to turn 29, she'd spent her career writing about celebrities' lives and had forgotten how to live her own. Unemployed and full of self-doubt, she had no idea what she wanted out of life. She feared change - in fact, she feared almost everything. Once confident and ambitious, she had become crippled by anxiety, lacking the courage required even to attend a dinner party - until inspiration struck one day in the form of a quote on a chalkboard in a coffee shop:
"Do one thing every day that scares you." -Eleanor Roosevelt
Painfully timid as a child, Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated herself to facing her fears, a commitment that shaped the rest of her life. With Eleanor as her guide, Noelle spends the months leading up to her 30th birthday pursuing a "Year of Fear". From shark diving to fighter pilot lessons, from tap dancing and stand-up comedy to confronting old boyfriends, her hilarious and harrowing adventures teach her about who she is and what she can become - lessons she makes vital for all of us.
Critic Reviews:
A charmingly candid memoir of the year a young journalist spent conquering her deepest fears.... Inspired, white-knuckled fun from start to finish." (

Simple & Sweet
Sometimes people forget a memoir is very personal---like reading someone's diary. I don't think this book was meant to be a literary work of art, but rather, an inspirational journey of self-discovery that the author was brace enough to share. It's funny, energetic, and uplifting! It's for someone who wants a quick, easy read to help you lose yourself in your own reality for as long as you like. I've read all sorts of books and this was is simple and sweet exactly what I needed at the time!
Totally Inspirational!
Totally inspirational book! Enjoyed learning more about Eleanor Roosevelt (which is why I purchased this book) and rooted for Noelle as she faced her fears, both large and small, in such bold ways. I am now an even bigger fan of Eleanor and plan to read more of her writings. My appreciation and admiration to Noelle for her openness and for her good writing.
My only negative observation: it was difficult getting "into" the book. Not sure why. I started it three different times and kept putting it down. Finally decided to plow through anyway and at some point, I was so intrigued that I *couldn't* put it down! Glad I kept going, and that Noelle kept going! Definitely worth it!
Inspirational, entertaining, and laugh out loud funny
I picked this book up on a whim after reading the good reviews, and I'm so glad I did! Noelle's story is exciting, funny, and inspiring. After losing her job, she decides to spend a year facing one new fear every day. From trapeze lessons, to stand-up comedy, to working in a funeral home, Noelle pushes herself to face her fears both big and small. Filled with some fascinating history and wonderful quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt, Noelle's journey through her year of fear had me laughing out loud and thoroughly entertained.
Not quite what I expected
I found this book hard to put down. I loved that each chapter started with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. Sometimes it took awhile to connect the quote to the content of the chapter it headed.
