Description
The Moment Nobody Warns You About
From No Sperm to Baby 2 Weeks Before 40
Everyone talks about the hard parts of the fertility journey.
The diagnosis. The failed cycles. The appointments that do not go the way you hoped. The grief that sits in your chest at baby showers and family dinners and everywhere else you have to perform fine.
Nobody talks about the moment that comes after all of that.
The fork in the road.
Rosanne Austin has been sitting across from women on the fertility journey for over twelve years. She has watched this moment arrive for hundreds of them. And she says what you do in that moment, more than your diagnosis, more than your age, more than any protocol, will ultimately determine whether you get your baby.
“What you do in that moment will ultimately determine success or failure on this journey.”
A Fertility Journey Fork in the Road
The Shift Beyond Your Fertility Journey Problem
The moment looks like a choice.
On one side: keep going. Stay on the high road. Insist on your yes.
On the other: quit. Take the low road. Let fear, doubt, lack, scarcity, shame, and the voices in your head decide for you.
Most women who quit do not experience it as quitting. That is the part nobody warns you about.
What they experience is relief.
Because right at the moment when quitting becomes an option, the subconscious mind does something insidious. It shows up with a silver platter of perfectly reasonable, perfectly sensible, perfectly logical excuses. Explanations that make complete sense. Reasons that feel compassionate and wise and mature.
“I’ve done everything I can.” “It’s time to accept reality.” “I need to think about my health.” “We’ve sacrificed enough.” “Maybe this just isn’t meant to be.”
Every single one of those sentences feels like a weight lifting from your chest.
And every single one of them, Rosanne says, is a lie.
Why Quitting Feels So Good
The relief is real. The feeling is genuine. But the feeling is not telling you the truth.
What the subconscious is doing in that moment is offering you a temporary anesthetic. A way to make the pain stop. Because the pain of staying, the uncertainty and the fear and the next step and the next growth edge and the next hard conversation, is more than it wants to tolerate right now.
So it hands you an exit that looks like wisdom.
The problem, Rosanne says, is that the relief does not last. And what comes after it does.
“When we choose the lie,” she says, “when we choose our fear, our doubt, our scarcity, our shame, our need for acceptance from all these other people who are telling us to give up, it is one hundred percent a setup for regret.”
Regret does not arrive right away. It shows up later. At the birthday party for the child you would have had. At forty-five. At fifty. At every moment you wonder what would have happened if you had stayed.
Who Is Really Encouraging You to Quit
Pay attention to whose voice is loudest when you are at the fork in the road.
Rosanne is direct about this: nobody who has succeeded on this journey is going to encourage you to give up. Because they know what is on the other side. They know how good it can be. They would never ask you to walk away from what they fought for themselves.
The voices that encourage you to quit belong to people who have quit on themselves. People who find kinship in quitting, who find validation in victimhood, who need you to join them in mediocrity because your persistence makes them uncomfortable.
“Anyone who would tolerate you not being your best from a loving place does not have your best interests at heart.”
That is a hard sentence. It is also true.
The women in Rosanne’s programs do not encourage each other to quit. Women who have their babies do not encourage other women to walk away. The people who love you most, who have seen what is possible, will push you toward your best, not away from it.
You Already Know How to Play the Long Game
Here is what Rosanne says to every professional woman who is at the fork in the road and trying to decide whether to keep going.
You have done this before.
You went to undergraduate. You survived law school, medical school, graduate school, the early years of building a business or climbing to the C-suite. You took the long game. You tolerated years of deferred gratification because you had a vision of who you were becoming and you refused to let short-term discomfort make your decisions.
This journey is not different. The commitment is the same. The capacity is the same. The woman who got herself here is the same woman who can get through this.
“Insisting upon your yes has paid off for women all over the world who were willing to get out of their comfort zone, become the woman who says yes, and now they’ve got a baby on their hip.”
The Woman in Italy
The morning this episode was recorded, Rosanne read an email from a client in Italy.
She had been trying for years. She had every reason to quit. And at the moment, the fork in the road, she followed the coaching. She took the high road. She kept saying yes.
She is having a baby boy.
“There is a woman out there who is far worse off than you who is holding her baby today,” Rosanne says. “It wasn’t because she got lucky, it wasn’t because she had more money, it wasn’t because she was a better person. It was because she didn’t quit.”
What to Do When You Are in the Moment
You will know when you are in it. Rosanne is specific about this.
You will be scared shitless.
That fear is not a sign to stop. That fear is the signal that you have arrived at the moment. The actual fork in the road. And now you get to choose.
“When you get that feeling, you’ll know it, because you’ll be scared shitless. That’s when you can say to yourself: that’s what Rosanne was talking about. I am in the moment.”
And then there is only one thing to do, if you are serious about having a baby in the next twelve months.
Keep saying yes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do when I feel like giving up on my fertility journey?
The feeling of wanting to give up on the fertility journey is nearly universal and does not mean you should. Rosanne Austin describes this as “the moment” — a fork in the road where the subconscious mind offers seemingly reasonable excuses to quit. She emphasizes that this feeling of relief is temporary and does not reflect your true desires. Before making any decision to stop treatment or change course, she recommends asking: if there were no external judgment, no money concerns, and no one else’s opinion involved, would I keep going? The honest answer to that question is the one worth following. Consider speaking with a mental health professional who specializes in fertility if the emotional weight of the journey has become unmanageable, in addition to any clinical consultations.
How do women who beat impossible fertility odds stay persistent?
Rosanne Austin has observed across more than twelve years of coaching that the common thread among women who beat less-than-1% odds is not a particular protocol, age advantage, or financial resource. It is persistence rooted in a clear identity: the decision that they are the woman who keeps going. This identity is built deliberately, through mindset work that addresses the fear, doubt, lack, and scarcity that drive premature quitting. The physiological component matters too: peer-reviewed research consistently links chronic stress and negative cognitive patterns to reduced reproductive outcomes, meaning the mindset work is not separate from the clinical picture but integral to it.
Is it normal to feel like quitting after a failed IVF cycle?
Yes, and it is one of the most commonly under-discussed aspects of the fertility journey. After a failed IVF cycle, the psychological impact is significant. Studies published in journals including Human Reproduction have found that failed IVF is associated with grief responses comparable to other major losses. The impulse to quit following a failure is not a sign of weakness or lack of desire — it is a natural protective response. Rosanne Austin’s work focuses on building the resilience infrastructure before and during treatment so that women have the internal resources to meet this moment with clarity rather than despair.
How long should I keep trying to get pregnant?
This is ultimately a deeply personal decision that involves clinical input from your reproductive endocrinologist, honest reflection on your goals and values, and attention to your own wellbeing. Rosanne Austin does not prescribe a timeline but challenges women to examine whether their decision to stop is coming from genuine clarity or from fear and exhaustion. She has worked with women who have been trying for fifteen years and gone on to have their baby. The question she asks is not “how long is too long” but “what does the woman who succeeds do at the fork in the road.”
