Description
The Question That Sparked This Conversation
How She Beats Impossible Odds
A woman raised her hand at the LIMITLESS retreat and asked a question Rosanne Austin had been thinking about for twelve years.
“What are the qualities of the women who actually beat the odds? The ones who had every reason to stop and didn’t. What did they have that others didn’t?”
It is one of the most useful questions anyone can ask on this journey. And after twelve-plus years of watching women succeed against statistics their doctors called impossible, Rosanne has a clear answer.
One of the top qualities she sees in every woman who gets her baby:
Integrity.
What Integrity Means Here
The Shift Beyond Your Fertility Journey Problem
Not integrity in the professional sense. Not the ethical kind. The personal kind.
In the simplest possible terms: integrity means keeping your word.
On the fertility journey, this means keeping your word to yourself about your dream. Staying aligned and faithful to the vision you have for your life, regardless of the labels you have accumulated, the statistics you have been handed, and the providers who have written you off.
It is the ability to say “this is what I want, this is what I said I was going to do, and I am going to do it” and then actually do it. Even when you are scared. Even when the numbers look bad. Even when it would be very easy to stop.
Rosanne is so careful with the word “infertility” that she rarely uses it. She believes it functions as a label that carries enormous weight, and that whatever we give our energy to will expand and gain a foothold in our thinking. She does not see the women she works with as infertile. She sees them as on a spectrum of fertility, moving toward the desire they have, one way or another, unless they give up.
She uses the word in this episode deliberately. Because the contrast it creates is useful. You are either in integrity with your dream, or you are loyal to the label. And understanding the difference may be the most important thing you do on this journey.
The Label Problem
Every woman who has been on this journey for any length of time knows how the labels accumulate.
Unexplained infertility. Advanced maternal age. PCOS. Low AMH. Recurrent miscarriage. Genetically incompatible. Your uterus looks fine, there is nothing more we can do.
Each label arrives with data. Statistics. A tone of finality that is often not warranted by the evidence. And over time, these labels start to feel less like medical observations and more like identity.
“I am infertile.” “I am too old.” “I am a failed case.”
This is the shift Rosanne is naming. The moment when the label stops being a data point and starts being an identity is the moment when integrity to the dream becomes much harder to maintain.
The women who succeed, the ones whose stories fill more than 390 episodes of this podcast, were given the same labels. Many of them were given dreadful ones. Less than 1% odds. Too complex a case. Written off entirely by their clinics.
What they did differently was not ignore the label. It was refuse to let it become their identity.
The distinction sounds subtle. It is not. “I have PCOS and I am going to find a way” is a fundamentally different internal state from “I have PCOS so it probably won’t work.” One produces persistence. The other produces an exit.
Dream or Label: This Is an Or-Proposition
Some people will push back on this framing. “It is not so simple,” they say. “You can acknowledge the diagnosis and still pursue the dream.”
Rosanne has compassion for that response and does not fully agree with it.
Not because the diagnosis and the dream cannot coexist. They can. But because in practice, the women who try to hold both with equal weight tend to drift toward the one that feels safer. And that is almost always the label.
The label is certain. It has evidence. It has medical authority behind it. The dream is uncertain. It requires faith. It requires action in the face of a poor odds ratio.
When the chips are down and the statistics look terrible, where does your loyalty actually go? That is the question. And the honest answer to it will tell you a great deal about what comes next.
“You are either choosing the dream or you are choosing the label,” Rosanne says. “They create wildly different results. It’s undeniable.”
Claiming Your Authority
There is a related pattern Rosanne observes constantly among women on this journey. Women who are highly accomplished in their professional lives, physicians, attorneys, executives, founders, sending her direct messages asking if it is okay to try to have a baby at forty-eight.
She understands the vulnerability behind that question. When you are scared and the world has been telling you to stop, you want someone to say it is okay to keep going.
But she also finds this pattern striking. Women who have fought for decades for bodily autonomy around reproduction are looking for external permission to pursue their own fertility. Women who built businesses and won cases and led teams are asking someone they do not even know whether they are allowed to want this.
This is not a political observation. It is a psychological one. And it points to exactly the kind of integrity leak Rosanne is describing.
Your dream is yours. The authority over it is yours. The decision to pursue it, with all of the uncertainty that entails, belongs to no one but you. And no label changes that.
The Victim Trap
Loyalty to the label has a companion: victimhood.
When we are most loyal to the label, we tend to feel most victimized by our circumstances. The system is against us. The odds are stacked. There is nothing we can do. And in that place, there is a kind of relief. We are no longer responsible for the outcome because the outcome has been determined by forces outside our control.
Rosanne does not blame anyone for feeling this way. The fertility journey is genuinely hard. Dr. Alice Domar published a study more than thirty years ago showing that women with infertility experience the same levels of anxiety and depression as women with cancer, AIDS, or heart disease. This is not easy territory.
But she is also clear: the women who beat the odds are not the ones who felt least victimized. They are the ones who refused to let victimhood be the last word. They felt scared and they kept going. They felt doubt and they kept going. They felt grief and they kept going.
“Women who beat the odds on this journey do not see themselves as victims,” Rosanne says. “They take full responsibility for their desires on this journey, and they do what it takes to get there.”
What This Looks Like in Practice
A 5% chance is still a chance. Rosanne points this out directly. The women who succeed are not the ones with the best odds. They are the ones who say: 5% is my chance, and I am going to leverage every bit of it.
The women who have already decided they’ve lost, before the attempt, before the cycle, before the appointment, will not leverage that 5%. They have already, in their own mind, ended the story.
Integrity over infertility is the practice of not ending the story before it has been written.
It is the practice of asking yourself, honestly: where is my loyalty right now? When I think about this journey, what shows up more? The evidence against it, or the vision I have for my life? And if the answer is the evidence, what would it take to shift that?
That shift is not a feeling. It is a decision. And decisions can be made regardless of circumstances.
“You are either going to have integrity to the dream,” Rosanne says, “or you are going to be loyal to the limitation. The choice is yours. Make a good one.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to have integrity on the fertility journey?
In this context, integrity means keeping your word to yourself about your dream. It is the alignment between what you say you want and what you stay loyal to in practice, especially when the diagnosis is hard, the statistics are discouraging, and the easy choice would be to stop. Rosanne Austin uses the concept of integrity to describe one of the most consistent qualities she observes in women who succeed against long odds on the fertility journey: they said they were going to find a way, and they did, regardless of what they were told.
How do I stop letting my fertility diagnosis define me?
The key distinction Rosanne Austin draws is between a diagnosis as a data point and a diagnosis as an identity. A diagnosis is medical information. It describes what is happening in your body at a given point in time. It is not a verdict, and it is not a fixed identity. The women who succeed on this journey tend to say “yes, and I’m finding a way” rather than “I have this diagnosis so it won’t work.” The shift from the second to the first is not denial. It is choosing which thing to stay loyal to: the label, or the dream. That choice is yours to make, and it creates measurably different outcomes over time.
Can mindset really change fertility outcomes?
The research says yes. Dr. Alice Domar’s federally-funded randomized controlled trial found that women who participated in a mind-body program had a 52 to 55% take-home baby rate compared to 20% in the control group. Multiple meta-analyses of 35 to 50 studies consistently show that women who receive psychological support have significantly higher pregnancy rates than those who do not. The mind-body connection in fertility is not a wellness concept. It is documented in peer-reviewed literature. The mindset work is not separate from the clinical strategy. It is part of it.
How do I keep going on the fertility journey when the statistics are bad?
Rosanne Austin’s answer is that the women who keep going are not the ones who feel least afraid or least discouraged. They are the ones who decided that their desire was worth more than the discomfort of uncertainty. Practically speaking, this means identifying where your loyalty actually is right now: on the dream, or on the evidence against it. It means building the internal skills, specifically the mindset tools, that allow you to hold faith in the face of discouraging data. These are skills that can be developed, not qualities you either have or do not have.
What do all the women who beat impossible fertility odds have in common?
Based on twelve-plus years of working with women who succeeded against statistics their doctors called impossible, Rosanne Austin consistently observes one quality above many others: they kept their word to themselves. Not in every moment, not without fear or grief, but as a practice. They said they were going to find a way and they did not stop looking until they did. They also, universally, got help. They surrounded themselves with people who believed in possibility rather than those who validated the quit.
