Description
She Gone, Baby. She Gone.
Fertility Journey Insights
The version of you that existed before your fertility journey — happy-go-lucky, easy, breezy, spontaneous, genuinely hopeful about the future — she is gone.
That might sting to read. Rosanne Austin knows it does. She lived a seven-year fertility journey herself and heard those words from the inside. But here is what she also knows, from over twelve years of coaching hundreds of women through this process to the other side: you are never going back. And fighting that fact is costing you energy you cannot afford to spend.
This post is about what to do instead.
Because the woman you are becoming — if you stop fighting her, stop pitying her, and start investing in her — can be someone you are genuinely proud of. Someone who is going to be a hell of a kick-ass mom.
Why You Are Not Going Back
The Shift Beyond Your Fertility Journey Problem
One of the things Rosanne hears from women most often is wanting to return to who they used to be, but you are not going back.
She gets it. She has so much compassion for it. And she is also going to tell you the truth: you have seen too much. You have experienced too much. You have been changed at a cellular level by what you have been through on this journey. There is no going back.
Now, your core values are probably mostly intact. Your kindness, your intelligence, your curiosity, your generosity — those are likely still there. But you may find yourself feeling more jittery, more insecure, more needy and uncertain than you ever have before. More isolated. More intensely aware of timelines. More drawn to community even if you have always been a lone wolf. More aware of what is missing than what is working.
That is not regression. That is transformation in progress. And the question is not how to go back. The question is what to do next.
Here are the four moves.
Move One: Accept It
The first and most important thing you can do is stop fighting the fact that you are on this journey.
Acceptance does not mean complacency. It does not mean giving up, making peace with failure, or deciding your life is over. It means, in a very unemotional way, saying: this is my current set of circumstances. I am not trapped by them. I am not going to fight them. This is what is real right now.
A significant portion of the suffering women experience on the fertility journey comes not from the journey itself but from the war they are waging against the fact that they are on it. Every day spent wishing you were not here is a day you are not moving forward from here. Acceptance stops that drain.
The fertility journey is, as Rosanne describes it, a bit of an existential crisis. It disrupts the timeline, the white picket fence, the order of events you had carefully laid out. Some of you did not get married until your forties. Some of you are not married at all. Some of you are watching everything you planned fail to materialize on schedule. Fighting that reality does not change it. Accepting it gives you your footing back.
Accept it. Do not fight it. Do not make it wrong.
Move Two: Do Not Assume the New You Is Worse
Once you have accepted that this journey is part of your current reality, the next move is to stop assuming that the woman you are becoming is somehow a downgrade from the woman you were.
You get to decide what the changes mean. That is your choice to make. And Rosanne is going to stand for the version of you that is better — not despite what you have been through, but because of it.
Women who escape the trap of victimhood and do the real work of this journey — the mindset work, the belief work, the identity work — do not come out the other side as lesser versions of themselves. They come out as women who have been forged. Who can spot opportunity in what looks like catastrophe. Who have developed a depth of self-knowledge that most people never access. Who are going to be extraordinary mothers because of what it cost them to get there.
The women who beat the odds in the Fearlessly Fertile community are not the ones who got lucky. They are the ones who chose to see what the journey was building in them rather than only what it was taking from them.
You can make that same choice.
Move Three: Ask a Better Question
When women find themselves on this journey, one of the first places they get stuck is an unanswerable question.
“Why me?”
“Why is this happening to me?”
“Am I being punished?”
Rosanne is not going to pretend those questions do not arise. She is going to tell you that spending any more time on them than it takes to notice them is a waste of your energy. They are not answerable. They do not move you forward. They anchor you in victimhood and keep you stuck.
The question that actually serves you is simpler and more powerful:
“What do I really want now?”
Not what did you want before. Not what does your partner want, or your mother, or your doctor. What do you want, right now, under the circumstances that actually exist? Because the sands shift fast on this journey. Decisions come at you quickly. Partners, providers, and protocols all require you to have clarity. And “why me” gives you none of it. “What do I really want now” gives you everything.
This question keeps you focused and moving forward. Ask it on a regular basis. The answer may change. That is fine. The clarity it provides does not.
Move Four: Purge to Pregnant
The final move is one of the most tangible and most underestimated.
Look around your life. Your environment. Your relationships. The objects in your space. The digital content you are consuming. The friendships you are maintaining. The stories you are still telling yourself about who you are and what is possible.
What in that list no longer matches who you are becoming?
Rosanne calls this the purge to pregnant. When you are doing the mental and emotional work of clarifying what you want and releasing the old identity, it is enormously powerful to extend that work into your physical environment. Clear out the things that are affirming the old story. Release the relationships that are anchoring you in limitation. Let go of the objects, the content, the spaces that remind you of who you are no longer choosing to be.
On her own fertility journey, Rosanne threw out tens of thousands of dollars in Theory suits. She had been a size zero or two before treatment. Post-treatment, those numbers were gone. And rather than keeping the reminders of a body she was no longer living in, she let them go. Not as defeat. As permission. Permission to be the woman she was actually becoming — the one who was heading toward motherhood, not backward toward a past that no longer fit.
You only want to keep the things in your life that affirm the woman you are becoming. That means upgrading your environment, your mindset inputs, your relationships, and your self-perception to match where you are going, not where you have been.
Kirsty's Story: What It Looks Like to Let the Old Story Go
Kirsty is one of the coolest women Rosanne has ever worked with. And her story is one of the most powerful examples of what it actually looks like to release the old identity and step into the new one.
Kirsty and her husband Jon met when they were both married to other people. They knew they were meant to be together. They found their way to each other despite the complications, the past, and the drama that comes when two people build a new life from the pieces of old ones.
When they finally got together, Jon was not fully on board with having a baby. They both had children from previous relationships. They were both in their forties. Kirsty tried to quiet the desire. To make peace with what was. And what happened instead was resentment — toward Jon, toward the family he had built with someone else, toward the life she was being asked to fit herself into.
She knew she could not let that rot her relationship. So she came to Rosanne.
Within six months, Kirsty:
Released her attachment to victimhood — after discovering it was the very thing standing between her and what she wanted.
Embraced the belief that she was destined to have a baby with her soulmate, and that her baby was already on the way.
Developed a deep relationship with herself and her own authentic desires, rather than trying to shape herself around someone else’s comfort.
Found an unshakable certainty from within that did not depend on Jon’s agreement, her age, or the statistics.
And on the eve of beginning an IVF cycle, she got pregnant naturally.
Today Kirsty and Jon have their baby boy. All because Kirsty had the guts to want it all — and the courage to let go of every old story that was in the way.
That is what “purge to pregnant” looks like from the inside.
The Bottom Line
The old you? She gone.
And the woman you are becoming, if you stop fighting her and start investing in her, is going to be someone worth meeting. Someone who is going to fight like hell for her baby, build a life she is proud of, and walk into motherhood knowing exactly what it cost her and exactly why it was worth it.
Stop wishing you could go back. Own this time. The woman you are becoming deserves it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I feel like a completely different person since starting my fertility journey?
Because you are. The fertility journey — with its timeline disruptions, medical complexity, emotional intensity, and identity challenges — changes people in ways that are real and often irreversible. Your core values are likely intact, but your experience of yourself in the world — your certainty, your ease, your sense of control — may feel profoundly altered. Rosanne Austin describes this as a natural and not necessarily negative transformation. The women who come out the other side of this journey and thrive are not the ones who fought the change. They are the ones who stopped making it mean they were broken and started asking what the change was building in them.
What does acceptance mean on the fertility journey? Is it giving up?
Acceptance in this context has nothing to do with giving up. It means, in a very unemotional and practical way, acknowledging the reality of your current circumstances without fighting it, making it wrong, or spending energy wishing it were different. Rosanne Austin draws a clear distinction: acceptance says “this is where I am right now, and I am not trapped here.” Complacency says “this is where I will always be.” The first creates peace and forward momentum. The second creates stagnation. Accepting that you are on this journey is one of the most powerful moves available to you — not because it changes the circumstances, but because it stops the energy drain of fighting what is already real.
How do I stop asking "why me" on the fertility journey?
The first step is noticing when you are doing it. “Why me” is an unanswerable question — it does not have a meaningful response, it does not move you forward, and it anchors you in victimhood. The replacement question Rosanne Austin recommends is: “What do I really want now?” This question is answerable, forward-facing, and keeps you focused on what you can actually influence. On a journey where circumstances shift quickly and decisions come fast, clarity about what you want right now — not what you wanted before, not what someone else wants for you — is one of the most powerful tools you have.
What is "purge to pregnant" and how does it help on the fertility journey?
Purge to pregnant is a concept Rosanne Austin developed to describe the practice of clearing your environment — physically, digitally, relationally — of anything that is no longer aligned with the woman you are becoming. This includes objects that affirm the old story, relationships that keep you anchored in limitation, and content that trains your brain in fear and scarcity. On her own fertility journey, Rosanne donated tens of thousands of dollars in clothes that no longer fit the body she was living in post-treatment. The act of releasing what no longer fits is both practical and symbolic: it creates space, reinforces clarity, and signals to yourself that the chapter you are entering is different from the one you are leaving.
Is it normal to feel isolated and misunderstood during the fertility journey?
Extremely common, especially for high-achieving women who are used to operating at a high level and finding that few people around them have the frame of reference to truly understand what they are navigating. The fertility journey tends to amplify any existing tendency toward operating as a lone wolf, while simultaneously creating a pull toward community that can feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Rosanne Austin notes this is one of the most consistent experiences she hears from her clients. The isolation is real. The pull toward connection is also real. Following that pull, rather than dismissing it as inconvenient, often becomes one of the most important moves a woman makes on this journey.
How do I become a better version of myself during the fertility journey rather than a worse one?
By making a deliberate choice about what the changes mean. The fertility journey will change you — that is not optional. What is optional is whether you decide that change is growth or decline. Rosanne Austin’s framework involves accepting where you are without making it wrong, doing the mindset and belief work to escape the pull of victimhood, asking the right questions to stay focused and forward-moving, and purging anything in your environment that affirms a version of yourself you are no longer choosing to be. The women in the Fearlessly Fertile community who beat the odds are not the ones who were least changed by this journey. They are the ones who let it make them better.
