Description
If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “If this gets harder, I’m out,” you’re not alone and that single thought can quietly reshape a marriage. We take on the modern tendency to treat marriage like a social contract, a piece of paper you can void when terms aren’t met, and we contrast it with the Bible’s far more demanding and life-giving vision of covenant.
Pastor Josh anchors the conversation in Genesis 2:24, where marriage is described as leaving, holding fast, and becoming one flesh. From there, we talk about how contract thinking keeps one foot out the door, turns love into a performance review, and encourages scorekeeping instead of sacrifice. We also connect today’s mindset to the Pharisees’ misuse of Deuteronomy 24, showing how legal loopholes can become spiritual excuses, and why the “corporate termination email” picture is uncomfortably close to how people treat commitment.
We also make an important clarification: covenant faithfulness is not a command to endure physical or mental abuse. If you are in danger, getting to safety and involving law enforcement is the right and necessary step. To bring it home, we challenge you to identify one relationship where you’re operating transactionally and to serve intentionally with zero expectation of return, because covenant love is built for storms.
