Description
Hard conversations get easier when we stop hunting for loopholes and start letting Jesus search our hearts. Today on Field Notes, we sit with Matthew 19:8 where Jesus explains why Moses allowed divorce “because of your hardness of heart” and that line lands like a spotlight. We’re not talking about winning an argument or finding a technical permission slip. We’re talking about the spiritual condition underneath stubbornness, unforgiveness, and the quiet insistence that someone else needs to change first.
We also call out a modern addiction that hides in plain sight: the idol of easy. When friction enters a marriage, when feelings fade, or when our own toxic traits show up, our culture tells us to hit the eject button. But Christian discipleship doesn’t aim at comfort; it aims at transformation. Real love requires dying to self, adapting, and laying down preferences for the good of your spouse. If we can’t even control basic things about ourselves, we should be careful about claiming we’re “perfect” and beyond growth.
Then we bring it down to one practical action step you can take today. Pick a specific point of tension in your life or marriage and ask a better question than “How do I escape?” Ask: “Jesus, what in me needs to change in this fire?” Write down one attitude, selfish habit, or defensive behavior to take radical ownership of and repent of today. If this challenged you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find Field Notes.
