Turning to Ephesians 5 and Malachi 2:14, Austin Gardner unpacks the difference between a contract and a covenant and why that distinction changes everything, not just for marriage, but for how we understand our relationship with God. Starting with the often-misused command for wives to submit, he shows how it's rooted in mutual submission (v. 21) and modeled on the order within the Trinity itself (1 Corinthians 11:3), never on control or superiority.
From there, the message moves to Malachi's picture of marriage as covenant: not a fifty-fifty arrangement built on doubt, but a self-giving promise built on trust — the kind sealed, in ancient culture, with a broken body and shed blood. Drawing on 53 years of marriage and decades of ministry in Peru, Austin traces that covenant language all the way to Calvary, showing in Ephesians 2:8-9 and 2 Timothy 2:13 that salvation itself is not a 50/50 partnership with God, but a gift — authored and finished by Christ, who remains faithful even when we don't.
A message about marriage that becomes a message about grace: God doesn't relate to us by contract. He relates to us by covenant.
