Are You Fighting Sin or Managing Appearances?

A lot of people know how to look “religious,” but Romans 8 refuses to let us hide behind appearances. Dr. Timothy Mann makes the case that it’s impossible to have a mind set on the Spirit while remaining cold to the things of God. If there’s no spiritual sensitivity, no holy affections, and no real battle with sin, the problem may be deeper than habits. It may be new birth. We walk through Romans 8:7–9 and face Paul’s hard conclusion: the fleshly mind is hostile to God, cannot submit to God’s law, and cannot please God. That means outward morality, self-sacrifice, and sincere effort can still be driven by self-love rather than the glory of God. Dr. Mann connects this to the gospel of Jesus Christ and to Jesus’ words in John 3: flesh produces flesh, but only the Holy Spirit produces spiritual life. Then the spotlight turns to assurance of salvation and sanctification. The indwelling Spirit “dwells” like He’s at home, and His presence shows up over time in desire for God, love for worship, and real repentance. From there we move into Romans 8:12–13 and the call to mortify sin: by the Spirit we put to death the deeds of the body. Along the way, we challenge modern self-love messaging and ask what true Christian growth looks like when we stumble, repent, and press on.
