What To Do When You Are the Bottleneck in Your Business
I learned this lesson the painful way. I built a successful agency, became the person everyone needed, and eventually ran that business into the ground. I thought being indispensable made me a great leader. What I had really built was dependency. If every decision, approval, problem, and question still lands on your desk, you don’t have a delegation problem. You may be the bottleneck. I’m breaking down how capable leaders accidentally train people to depend on them, then wonder why nobody takes ownership. Real leadership means building people who can think, decide, and act without you standing beside them. That requires more than handing off tasks. You must transfer ownership, authority, clarity, and accountability. And yes, you must let people struggle a little. The hardest part? Becoming willing to be unnecessary. Your next stage of growth won’t come from doing more yourself. It comes from building a business that values your leadership without requiring your constant involvement. You built it around you. Now it’s time to build it beyond you. Key Takeaways: · How to spot the subtle signs that you’ve become the bottleneck · Why giving people answers can quietly train them to depend on you · What has to change before your team can truly take ownership · Where perfectionism and the need to feel needed can limit growth · A simple test that exposes exactly where your business still depends on you About Rebecca: In 2008, I blew up my life in spectacular fashion. I left a cult, got divorced, and for a time, lost even the few people I had leaned on. I thought greener grasses awaited me. I was wrong. Despite building a wildly successful digital marketing business, remarrying and growing my family to four kids, I felt nothing but dread each morning. Then came what I now call Epiphany Town. It was that electric moment when I stopped defining my life by what happened to me and began building on purpose. That phase lit me up in a way I had never felt. Now I devote every ounce of my energy to guiding others through their own version of Epiphany Town. I help them find the barriers that are actually holding them back, finally let go of self-sabotaging stories, and leap into a life that is meaningful and deeply fulfilling. I believe each of us has a story to tell, a gift to offer, and a life worth waking up for. Whether your goal is to impact one person or a million, I am here to help you see your place, claim your voice, and live your life on your terms. https://rebeccamountain.ca/ Thanks for listening! Are You Building Goodwill, or Discounting Your Value?
There’s a big difference between generosity that builds your value and generosity that quietly tears it down. I learned this lesson the hard way. When you give discounts, extras, or freebies because you’re afraid someone might say no, you’re not just lowering the price. You’re teaching people what they can expect from you. And trust me, once you start giving yourself away, people rarely stop asking. I want you to think about goodwill differently. Picture a goodwill bank account. People make deposits through effort, trust, loyalty, referrals, or reciprocity. Then, when it makes sense, you can choose to make a withdrawal for them. The key word is choose. I’ll show you why goodwill needs clear limits, a budget, and criteria. I’ll also explain why your ability to say no makes your yes far more valuable. This applies far beyond business. It shows up in your career, your relationships, your parenting, and every place where you’re tempted to overextend yourself. Your job isn’t to stop being generous. It’s to stop discounting yourself. Key Takeaways: · Recognize when generosity is coming from confidence versus fear. · Create boundaries that let you give without draining yourself. · Know when an extra effort strengthens a relationship instead of weakening it. · Protect the value of your time, money, energy, and expertise. · Build the confidence to say no without defending or explaining yourself. Encore Presentation:The Reason You’re Still Stuck (And Why You Can’t See It) | S2028
Some lessons are worth hearing again, especially when the patterns holding us back are the ones we can’t see. I’m bringing this conversation back as an encore because your blind spots don’t always disappear once you’ve spotted them. They can show up in new forms, at new levels, and right when you think you’ve finally figured your shit out. There’s a ceiling most high performers never see… and I’ll tell you right now, it’s not about skill, strategy, or motivation. It’s about the stories you’re telling yourself that feel so true you don’t even question them. I’ve lived this. I’ve held onto things, justified them, and watched them quietly shape my results without realizing it. The uncomfortable truth is that the smarter you are, the better you get at hiding your own blind spots. In this conversation, I walk you through how these invisible patterns form, why your brain protects them, and how they quietly keep you stuck at the same level. We talk about the “invisible ceiling” that shows up when you’re working harder but not getting better results, and why effort, information, and willpower won’t fix it. If you’ve ever said “that’s just who I am,” this is your wake-up call. You don’t have a motivation problem. You have a visibility problem. And once you see the pattern, everything can change. Key Takeaways: · How to recognize when working harder is hiding the real reason you feel stuck. · What your most convincing explanations may reveal about your hidden patterns. · Why high performers can be especially good at missing their own blind spots. · The clues that can help you spot an invisible ceiling before pushing even harder. · How a fresh perspective can expose something you may never uncover alone. About Rebecca: In 2008, I blew up my life in spectacular fashion. I left a cult, got divorced, and for a time, lost even the few people I had leaned on. I thought greener grasses awaited me. 3 Tricks to Stop Procrastinating and Get Things Done
You know the thing you should be doing. You’ve probably known for days, maybe weeks. But knowing doesn’t mean your butt is actually going to get out of the chair and do it. I’ve learned that trying to force myself through work I hate rarely works. My brain is way too good at finding something else to do. Suddenly laundry looks fascinating, snacks become urgent, and another walk seems completely reasonable. So instead of fighting my brain, I work with it. I’m sharing three tricks I use to get myself moving when I don’t feel like doing the work. We’ll look at using time away to create natural urgency, changing your surroundings when your usual space invites distraction, and separating planning from action so you stop burning energy deciding what comes next. You don’t need more guilt or another speech about discipline. You need a setup that makes action easier. Pick the strategy that fits how your brain works, try it, and get the damn thing done. Key Takeaways: · Learn why motivation isn’t always the best place to start when you need to take action. ·Recognize how your brain can turn perfectly reasonable excuses into permission to procrastinate. · Discover ways to design your surroundings so focus requires less willpower. · Learn how reducing small daily decisions can preserve energy for the work that matters. · Build a simple system that separates thinking from doing so bigger projects keep moving forward. About Rebecca: In 2008, I blew up my life in spectacular fashion. I left a cult, got divorced, and for a time, lost even the few people I had leaned on. I thought greener grasses awaited me. I was wrong. Despite building a wildly successful digital marketing business, remarrying and growing my family to four kids, I felt nothing but dread each morning. 3 Hidden Barriers Keeping Coaches Underpaid | S2026
Most coaches don't struggle with what they know. They struggle with what they'll charge for it. I break down the three emotional barriers that keep skilled coaches, consultants, and educators underpaid. We look at how imposter syndrome makes you question your expertise, why getting paid creates a whole new level of pressure, and what happens when you take responsibility for clients who won’t do the work. I also share how to price your coaching around the results you can help create without making promises you can’t control. Your business may not need another certification, strategy, or funnel. It may need you to stop letting fear set your prices, choose your clients, and decide how visible you’re willing to become. The barrier is internal, but that also means you have the power to remove it. Key Takeaways: How emotional language helps you think clearly when fear gets loud. When practice builds confidence and when free beta work becomes a hiding place. A better way to price coaching around value and likely client outcomes. How to set honest expectations without promising results you cannot control. Why the wrong clients can distort your confidence, pricing, and view of your skills.
