The fundamental pretense of compulsory education is that standardized, uniform instruction can successfully serve diverse human beings.
In Part 1 of The Ultimate History Lesson: A Weekend with John Taylor Gatto, John details how he systematically broke that mold inside the New York City public school system. Operating from the recognition of individual human nature, Gatto set out each year with an inner intention: if he had 120 students, he would build 120 individually tailored curricula.
He transformed his classrooms into environments of active, rigorous dialectic—continually questioning his own assumptions and forcing his students to question him and themselves. The resulting creative and productive output was so extraordinary that administrative delegations visited on an almost daily basis for months at a time. They invariably left perplexed, unable to recognize the familiar coercive scripts of standard "schooling."
As Gatto explains, they were correct: it was less and less schooling, and increasingly an authentic pursuit of genuine education.
