Acts Series Part 18: How do we know when God is opening a door?

Send Dean your question here Acts Chapter 14: How do we know when God is opening a door?  How do we recognise a God-given opportunity? We often assume an “open door” means everything falls into place—the timing is right, people are encouraging, and the path feels easy. But what happens when doing the right thing becomes difficult, or an exciting opportunity raises questions we can’t ignore? In Acts 14, Paul and Barnabas encounter remarkable responses to the gospel alongside misunderstanding, opposition and suffering. Yet at the end of their journey, they celebrate how God has opened a door of faith. Their experience reminds us that difficulty doesn’t automatically mean “stop”, and approval doesn’t automatically mean “go”. Recognising God’s leading requires more than favourable circumstances. This message invites us to consider the opportunities and decisions we face through three practical questions: Does this fit what God has already made clear? What does love require in our circumstances? And what is the next wise step we can take with others? Through prayer, honest reflection and wise counsel, we can move forward with courage and humility. Whether you’re facing a new opportunity, a difficult conversation or a demanding responsibility, the encouragement is this: we don’t need to know the whole journey to take the next faithful step. We can receive God’s kindness gratefully, examine opportunities wisely, and trust him with what follows.
