Acts Series Part 19: His Grace is Sufficient
Acts 15 describes the church gathering to settle a crucial issue of doctrine. While it began with a debate about circumcision, underneath lay a deeper question: Is the work of Jesus and his grace enough for anyone to be saved? The answer is a joyful yes. Some believers insisted that Gentiles must keep the law of Moses before they could fully belong to God’s people. But Peter reminded the church that God had already accepted them, giving them the Holy Spirit and purifying their hearts through faith. Everyone—new believers and lifelong disciples alike—is saved through the grace of Jesus. His work is sufficient, and his welcome is a gift we receive, not a reward we earn.
This is good news for all of us. We can come to Jesus with our questions, struggles, and unfinished growth, trusting that he is enough. Church traditions and convictions can help us follow him, but they must never become conditions of his welcome. The fruit of maturity must not become the price of admission. We grow because we have been welcomed by grace.
For those who feel they have failed too often, this brings hope. For those worn out by trying to prove themselves, it brings rest. Our confidence rests in Jesus: in his death and resurrection, his love, and his faithfulness. We do not have to begin each day wondering whether we have done enough to secure his welcome. We can begin with gratitude for what he has already done. From that place of assurance, obedience becomes a response of love, and serving God becomes an expression of joy. Grace gives us both a secure place to stand and courage to move forward.
Discovering and rediscovering this truth has sparked revival, fuelled reformation, and transformed countless lives. The good news that Jesus is enough is freeing and powerful. It releases us from the pressure to earn God’s acceptance, draws us near to him, and gives us confidence to live for him. We can face our weaknesses honestly and take our next steps in faith, knowing that his grace is sufficient for us. The grace that first welcomes us is the grace that sustains us every day.
The church reached its decision through listening, discussion, attention to God’s work, and careful consideration of Scripture. Together, they recognised and celebrated what God was already doing: gathering people from different backgrounds into one family through Jesus. Following the Spirit involved discerning together with humility and rejoicing in the reach of God’s grace.
The instructions sent to the Gentile believers offered guidance for a changed life and shared fellowship, rather than additional conditions for earning salvation. Jesus’ grace welcomes us, and his Spirit teaches us to follow him. We never outgrow our need for that grace or exhaust its generosity. We are called to be a church that delights in the sufficiency of Jesus, helps people grow in holiness, and makes his gracious welcome unmistakably clear.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that you welcome us by grace. Help us put down the burden of trying to earn your love. Show us where we have made following you harder for others. Give us patience to help one another grow, and lead us by your Spirit into holiness and love. Amen.
