Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 1

John Calvins Institutes of the Christian Religion stands as a cornerstone of Protestant systematic theology, profoundly influencing thought throughout the Western world. First published in Latin in 1536 and subsequently in French in 1541, with definitive editions arriving in 1559 and 1560, this work serves as an essential primer on the Protestant faith for those already familiar with theological concepts. It delves into a wide array of topics, from the doctrines of the church and sacraments to the principles of justification by faith and Christian liberty. Moreover, Calvin passionately critiques the beliefs of those he deemed unorthodox, especially Roman Catholicism, to which he had previously been devoted before embracing Protestantism. Central to the text—and to Calvins lasting theological impact—is the notion of Gods ultimate sovereignty, particularly regarding salvation and election. Book One focuses on the knowledge of God as the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of the universe and everything within it.
