038 - Transformers (1986): The Toy Ad That Killed Optimus Prime

The Transformers: The Movie (1986) turns 40, and we're still arguing about what happened to Optimus Prime. Hasbro is calling its anniversary campaign the Apology Tour. Fair warning: we remember why. For Episode 38, we put a lifelong G1 fan in the room with first-time viewers and ask how much this movie gives you when childhood isn't doing the heavy lifting. You get a planet-eating Unicron, a stack of fallen heroes, and barely a moment to learn the new names before somebody starts shooting again. We argue over Hot Rod's responsibility, Ultra Magnus's leadership credentials, and the very convenient rules for which robots can be put back together. Then there's the soundtrack. Stan Bush's The Touch is part of the film's identity, but can nonstop music carry a story that's always racing to the next battle? We also pitch remakes that give Hot Rod an actual reckoning, let Megatron chase power on his own terms, or stretch the story into two movies. Bring your favorite Autobot and your best defense. We've got room for both the kid who wore out the tape and the adult asking where the introductions went. Nostalgia Hunters, post your verdict: Cool or Just Nostalgia?
