In Matthew 24, Jesus does something remarkable. Rather than leaving his followers in the dark about what is coming, he pulls back the curtain on history itself and says, here is what to look for. The central message is not one of fear but of preparation. Jesus describes a progression of signs, wars and rumors of wars, ethnic tensions, famines, plagues, earthquakes, and growing spiritual deception, and compares them to the early contractions of a woman in labor. These are not random chaos. They are purposeful indicators that something greater is approaching. The spiritual lesson woven through all of it is this: the world is not spinning out of control. History is moving exactly where God said it would move. For us, that changes everything. When we see unsettling headlines or feel the weight of a world growing darker, we are not watching a story without an author. We are watching a story moving toward its climax. The question Jesus presses us with is not whether we can predict the date, but whether we are spiritually awake and anchored in truth when the signs begin to intensify around us.

In Matthew 23, we encounter one of the most confrontational passages in all of Scripture, where Jesus delivers a series of sharp warnings to the religious leaders of his day. But here is the surprising truth at the heart of it all: these warnings were not born out of hatred. They were born out of love. The Pharisees had mastered the art of looking right while being deeply wrong on the inside, and Jesus refused to let that go unchallenged. This message forces us to ask a hard but necessary question about our own lives: are we pursuing a genuine relationship with God, or have we settled for the appearance of one? Religion, as Jesus exposes it here, is a system that teaches us to clean the outside of the cup while the inside remains a mess. It trains us to obsess over minor details while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. The spiritual lesson here cuts deep: outward behavior can never substitute for inward transformation. What God is after is not a polished performance but a changed heart. As we sit with this passage, we are invited to examine not just what others see when they look at us, but what God sees when he looks within us.

What does it look like when faith becomes a performance? In Matthew 23, we come face to face with one of the most searching questions Jesus ever raised, not directed at skeptics or outsiders, but aimed squarely at the most religiously devoted people of his day. The scribes and Pharisees knew the scriptures, kept the traditions, wore the symbols, and held the seats of honor, yet Jesus looked past all of it and saw hearts that were far from God. The central warning here is one we cannot afford to ignore: it is entirely possible to look like a follower of God while never truly following him. Religion, as Jesus exposes it, is humanity's exhausting attempt to reach up to a holy God through rules, appearances, and effort. But Jesus came down to us, and his invitation in Matthew 11 stands in sharp contrast to the heavy burdens religious systems place on people. He calls us to rest, not to a longer checklist. As we sit with this passage, we are invited to ask ourselves an honest question about whether our faith is rooted in a living relationship with Jesus or in the performance of it for others to see.

What if the areas of our lives that feel most stuck are not waiting on God to move, but waiting on us to become intentional? Drawing on Paul's call in Romans 12 to be transformed by the renewing of the mind, we are challenged to see that transformation is not something that simply happens to us. It is something we participate in. God changes us, but we must cooperate. The message frames this cooperation around four memorable principles: suit up, shut up, show up, and slow up. Each one represents a deliberate, daily choice to invite God into the areas of our lives we most want to see changed. Whether it is a struggling marriage, a distant relationship with our kids, a dry spiritual life, or a pattern of anxiety and complaint, the honest question being asked of us is not why God has not fixed it, but which of these four practices we have been neglecting. This is a message about the gap between wanting change and actually pursuing it, and it calls us to close that gap with courage and consistency.

Using the four chapters of Jonah as a framework, this sermon explores how an imperfect prophet's journey of rebellion, repentance, obedience, and misplaced anger mirrors the struggles believers face today. The central argument is that God's grace is not reserved for the worthy but is available to all people, including the most wicked and broken. Just as God used a reluctant and flawed Jonah to bring an entire city to repentance, He continues to use imperfect people to accomplish extraordinary things. The sermon challenges believers to examine their own hearts, identify the "Ninevites" in their lives, and choose obedience over self-will, recognizing that God's plan is always greater than our own.
