Shelby County Emergency Management with Chris Spaulding

Your phone buzzes with an alert, sirens sound in the distance, and suddenly you’re asking the question everyone asks at the same time: what do I do now? We talk with Chris Spaulding, Director of Shelby County Emergency Services, to unpack the real work of emergency management in Shelby County, Kentucky and why “preparation” is more than a slogan. Chris explains how county emergency plans stay updated and what it takes to be ready for everything from tornadoes to hazardous materials incidents. We also learn about at a major step forward in local disaster preparedness: a FEMA-approved tornado shelter that’s being built as part of a larger public safety facility. Then we shift into public safety communications you can use right now. Chris breaks down Shelby County Alerts through Rave Mobile Safety, how local alerts differ from TV station notifications, and why removing the “middle man” can speed up life-saving information.  He also explains Smart911 profiles and what Next Generation 911 could soon enable, including texting 911 and eventually sending video to dispatch for faster, smarter response.
