Stu Woods joins TS Wright on the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast for the second message in his teaching series through the Gospel of John. The discussion centers on John 2:1–11, where Jesus attends a wedding in Cana of Galilee with His mother and disciples. When the wedding celebration runs out of wine, what appears to be an embarrassing social crisis becomes the setting for Jesus’ first recorded miraculous sign. Rev. Woods examines the historical and cultural background of first-century Jewish weddings and explains how serious running out of wine could have been for the bridegroom and his family. Mary recognizes the problem and brings it to Jesus. From this account, Rev. Woods identifies three major truths: 1. Take all your problems to Jesus—but resist telling Him what to do. Mary presents the problem to Jesus without prescribing the solution. This becomes an important lesson concerning prayer. God knows how to answer according to His purposes, timing, wisdom, and greater plan. Not every prayer is answered exactly as we anticipate, but believers can place their concerns before Christ and trust His wisdom. 2. Jesus is generous, not stingy. Jesus does not simply provide enough wine to barely resolve the crisis. Six large stone water jars are filled to the brim, and the water is transformed into exceptionally good wine. The master of the banquet declares that the best wine has been saved until last. The miracle reveals something about the character of Christ: Jesus is not a miser or a minimalist. His provision demonstrates generosity and grace. 3. Jesus is Master Over Matter. John 1:3 declares that all things were made through Jesus. At Cana, the Creator demonstrates His authority over creation itself. Water becomes wine through the command and power of Christ. The miracle therefore serves a greater purpose than simply meeting the needs of a wedding celebration. It is a sign pointing toward the identity of Jesus Christ. John records that through this sign Jesus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. Rev. Woods also examines the significance of Jesus performing His first sign at a wedding. Scripture later presents Christ as the Bridegroom and His people as His bride, pointing ultimately toward Jesus giving His life for those He came to redeem. The episode connects the miracle at Cana with the larger purpose of the Gospel of John: Jesus performed signs so that people might believe that He is the Messiah, the Son of God, and through believing receive life in His name. Scriptures Discussed John 1:3 John 1:14 John 2:1–11 John 3:16–17 John 20:30–31 Exodus 20:12 Psalm 104:15 Ephesians 5:18 Key Takeaways Bring every problem—large or small—to Jesus. Trust Christ’s wisdom instead of attempting to dictate how God must answer prayer. Jesus’ miracles are signs revealing His identity, authority, and glory. Christ is generous and gracious in His provision. The miracle at Cana demonstrates Jesus’ authority over the physical creation. Jesus came for a purpose far greater than solving temporary problems: He came to save. The Gospel of John calls every person to examine the evidence concerning Jesus and respond in faith. Closing Challenge Do not merely marvel at what Jesus did at Cana. Recognize what the miracle reveals about who Jesus is. Surrender your concerns, hopes, future, and life to Jesus Christ—the One who created all things and remains Master Over Matter. And as TS Wright declares at the conclusion of the program: Go forth in total surrender to the One who owns and reigns over all creation—and let the Great Harvest begin.
