296 - Motivation Fades. Commitment Carries You Through with John Ulsh

A routine drive home from his daughter’s swim meet changed John Ulsh’s life in seconds. After a head-on collision with a combined impact speed of 125 miles per hour, he was given a 3% chance of survival. He awoke from an 18-day coma paralyzed from the waist down, beginning a recovery that would include 45 accident-related surgeries. Surviving did not restore John’s old life. More than two years later, his daughter tearfully told him she missed the father who used to train with her. The next day, John left outpatient physical therapy and entered a local YMCA, where rebuilding his body became a way to reclaim his role as a father—and turn pain he could not control into effort he could. That experience reshaped John’s understanding of achievement. The finish line does not teach the most important lessons; the setbacks, adjustments, and daily practice do. Instead of measuring himself against who he had been before the accident, he learned to create a new definition of progress.
