Description
The Creek's Secret Shoe: Why Wagner Confessed But Stayed Convicted
A sixteen-gallon plastic storage bin weighted with a concrete block and sealed with clear packing tape was pulled from Peller Creek at 6:42 a.m. in April 2014 containing a single size eight black leather pump with its heel snapped off and a water-damaged spiral notebook whose last grocery list ends with "almonds" and a hand-drawn star - but no body. Who packed Angela Bowers’s cardigan, notebook, prescription bottle and lone shoe into that bin, and why would a recorded confession later change nothing about the conviction?
In this episode, we lay out the timeline and the physical evidence recovered from the creek and Elden Place, the routine of the missing woman, and the connections investigators traced to a maintenance contractor; what do these objects and the recorded statements really tell us about what happened to Angela Bowers?
Person: Angela Bowers
Date: April 1-2, 2014
Location: Peller Creek; Elden Place (second-floor apartment)
Item: sixteen-gallon plastic storage bin sealed with clear packing tape and weighted with a concrete block
Witness: Tamara Bowers (identified the shoe from a photograph)
- The bin was pulled from Peller Creek by Lori Ford at 6:42 a.m, on a Tuesday in April 2014.
- Inside the bin were one black leather pump size 8 with its heel snapped off, a water-damaged spiral notebook, and a dark green wool cardigan with two buttons missing.
- The notebook’s last grocery list ends with the word "almonds" followed by a small hand-drawn star.
- Angela’s dark blue 2005 Honda Civic was found locked with engine cold in the Hargrove Street grocery lot the night she was reported missing.
- Building manager Douglas Petit had hired Jason Wagner 14 months earlier; maintenance logs showed six visits in the month before Angela’s disappearance that Wagner had not recorded.
