Description
Alone on One Boot: How Lisa Survived Two Frozen Nights
Cold, isolation, and a single upright ski boot in eleven-degree air-this episode opens on a mystery that promises life-or-death tension: a size-seven women’s ski boot found forty yards inside the tree line with no tracks around it-how did it get there, and where was the person who had been wearing it?
In this episode, we follow the timeline and concrete evidence that led searchers astray and left Lisa Lane alone for two nights; we lay out what she carried, what happened on the ice, and the small physical details that changed the course of the search-could a single ink bloom in a trail register and a frozen binding explain why no one found her sooner?
Person: Lisa Lane
Date: December 11-14, 2019
Location: Minnow River corridor, Callard Township
Temperature: 11 degrees Fahrenheit at 7:41 AM on December 14
Item found: Size-seven women’s cross-country ski boot, laces cut, buckle closed
- Lisa Lane was 52 years old and had taught high school biology for 22 years.
- She signed the trailhead register on December 11 and listed Pam Ketterly as her emergency contact and return date December 13.
- On the morning of December 12 Lisa fell through ice chest-deep about 25 feet from the far bank of an oxbow.
- After falling in, her left boot binding seized with ice; she cut the laces and left the boot at the river bank.
- On December 14 at 7:41 AM Harvey Lewis found a single upright women’s ski boot 40 yards from the nearest trunk with eight inches of fresh snow around it and no footprints.
