Description
Locked From Inside: How a Lookout Vanished for 31 Hours
Adrenaline tightens the chest: a fire lookout alone, a padlock locked from the inside, a cup of coffee left cold-how do you explain 31 hours of silence when the gate is padlocked and no footprints cross the ash? Fire lookout, locked gate, missing person-what exactly happened in those thirty-one hours before dawn revealed her again?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events around that night on Saddleback Rim and the small failures that compounded into a crisis. We follow what Connie Lane recorded, what district dispatch logged, and the road and barrier conditions that shaped her choices-could any single change have prevented her being isolated?
Person: Connie Lane
Age: 44 years old
Location: Saddleback Rim, Ochoco National Forest, Oregon
Date: November 2-3, 2019
Event: 31 hours of silence after fire behavior became extreme
- Connie had been a fire lookout for eleven seasons and kept precise logbooks with 24-hour timestamps.
- At 23:58 on November 2 she logged an orange glow at bearing 228 degrees and radioed it in.
- Dispatcher Phil Tran later transcribed Connie’s reported bearing as 282 degrees, a transposition error shifting it about 14 miles on the map.
- Connie drove down Forest Road 1640 at night, looped the chain, padlocked the lower gate from the inside, then drove back up, sealing herself below but leaving the top barrier unrepaired.
- At 03:17 she wrote “Fire behavior extreme. Road is gone - can see flame in the trees at the first switchback. I am not getting down tonight,” then the Crane Butte repeater burned and thirty-one hours of silence began.
