The Dark Side Of Deliverance Ministry

What happens when something is labeled demonic… but it isn’t? Spiritual warfare is real—but recognizing a spiritual battle requires discernment. And when every troubling behavior, intrusive thought, personality change, or emotional struggle is automatically treated as evidence of demonic influence, well-intentioned attempts to help can sometimes cause even greater harm. In this powerful episode of LifeTVnow, Joe Horn and Jamie Woodle continue their conversation with licensed clinical mental-health counselor Dr. Natalie Atwell, author of Humanity Under Siege, to explore an uncomfortable side of deliverance ministry that the Church rarely talks about. What happens when trauma is mistaken for demonic oppression? Can symptoms of serious psychological conditions resemble something spiritual? And how should Christians respond when both clinical and spiritual factors may be involved? Dr. Atwell also takes us inside one particularly difficult area—dissociative identity disorder and severe childhood trauma—and explains why attempting to “cast out” something without understanding what you're actually dealing with can potentially harm the very person you're trying to help. This isn't an argument against spiritual warfare or deliverance. It's a conversation about discernment, humility, biblical wisdom, and treating the whole person. Because before deciding how to help someone, there's a much more important question: Do you actually know what you're dealing with?
