Description
The Relay Ledger: Who Wrote Bell's Final Night Messages?
A bound railroad ledger washed up in the Salla River with brass clips unrusted and pages still legible-yet the last entries were not written in Edward Bell’s hand. The ledger, recovered two miles south of Harmon's Ford on September 9, 1893, contains three outgoing transmissions at 11 p.m., including one to a decommissioned Lynnville freight code-who else could have keyed Bell’s final messages?
In this episode, we follow the discovery of the ledger, the state in which Marshal Ira Spence found Bell, and the analysis by Midland Continental detective Stanley Walsh that points to an unfamiliar hand on the night entries. What do those three transmissions and the misplaced station key reveal about Bell’s disappearance and death?
Person: Edward Bell
Date: September 7-9, 1893
Location: Cass Hollow relay station; ledger found 2 miles south of Harmon's Ford on the Salla River
Investigator: Stanley Walsh, Midland Continental security detective
Observer: Connie Padgett, found ledger at ~08:00 on September 9
- The ledger was wrapped in oilskin, brass clips unrusted, pages damp but legible.
- Edward Bell had been the relay operator at Cass Hollow for 19 years and was 44 years old.
- The station key was hanging on the outside hook despite Bell's habit of locking from inside and carrying the key.
- An iron counterweight on Bell’s desk showed signs of recent cleaning and was found back in place.
- At 11:00 p.m. on September 6 the log’s handwriting changed and recorded three outgoing transmissions with no incoming acknowledgments.
