That was my experience. Long before I knew to call it macro social work, I was sitting in case management jobs questioning why the same people kept cycling through the same programs, why policies were being implemented differently across communities, and why so many of the problems I was expected to address individually were actually connected to much larger systems-level issues. Eventually, I realized I didn’t want to spend my career only responding to what happened after decisions were made. I wanted to get closer to the places where programs were designed, resources were allocated, systems were evaluated, and decisions affecting entire communities were being made.
