Jerusalem is under threat, the walls are failing, and the enemy is close enough to see, so what do the people do next? Isaiah 22 gives an answer that feels uncomfortably modern: they double down on what they can control and leave God out of the plan. We slow down and read the “Valley of Vision” prophecy carefully, showing how a city surrounded by spiritual truth can still act spiritually blind when pressure hits.
We talk through the practical details Isaiah highlights: weapons stockpiles, reinforced defenses, and water security, and why the problem isn’t preparation itself. The warning is self-reliance that becomes functional unbelief. God calls for repentance, humility, and mourning, yet the crowd answers with distraction and despair: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” If you’ve ever used busyness, entertainment, or productivity to avoid heart-level change, this chapter speaks right into that moment.
The back half turns to leadership, first with Shebna, a proud official building his legacy while the nation crumbles, then with Eliakim, a servant entrusted with authority and the “key of the house of David.” We also sit with the surprising ending: even a good leader is still just a peg that can give way, which is why ultimate trust belongs to the Lord of hosts alone.
