The Doctrine of Common Grace. Genesis 4:16-22. [Sermon]
The City of Cain | Common Grace, Technology, Music, and the Gifts of God (Genesis 4:16–22) What can we learn from Cain, the first murderer in the Bible, who went on to build a city and father a family? In this sermon from Genesis 4:16–22, Rev. Dr. Matthew Everhard explores the biblical doctrine of common grace and explains how God's gifts can be used for tremendous good or terrible evil. Even after Cain was banished from the presence of the Lord, he experienced many earthly blessings: marriage, children, music, technology, and the founding of a city. These gifts remind us that God shows kindness even to those who do not know Him savingly. But common grace is not the same as saving grace, and the blessings of this life should lead us toward the Lord rather than away from Him. In this message from the Proto-History of the World sermon series, discover how Genesis 4 helps us think biblically about the gifts and technologies that shape human civilization. IN THIS SERMON: What is common grace, and how does it differ from saving grace? Why does God give earthly blessings even to unbelievers? How can marriage and human sexuality be used for good or evil? What does the Bible teach us about the power of music? How can music be used to worship God—or manipulate human emotions? How can technological advances serve humanity or become instruments of destruction? What can Cain's city teach us about civilization, community, and corruption? How should Christians use their time, raise their children, and respond to new technologies such as artificial intelligence? How can we live our lives wholly for the glory of God? KEY SCRIPTURES: Genesis 4:16–22; Matthew 5:45; Psalm 150; Song of Solomon 8:6–7; 1 Samuel 16:23; Daniel 3:4–5; Romans 13. THE BIG IDEA: Common grace is a gift from God, intended to turn our hearts toward Him. Yet the blessings of creation can be misused for selfishness, idolatry, manipulation, and destruction. Christians must learn to receive God's gifts with gratitude and use them faithfully for His glory. From the printing press to artificial intelligence, from music to marriage, the question is not merely what humanity can accomplish, but whether we will use God's gifts in ways that honor Him.
