Few words frighten people in skincare like “preservatives.” We’ve been taught that preservative-free sounds clean, paraben-free sounds safer, and natural sounds best. But here’s the simple truth I keep coming back to: a contaminated cream is not a good cream. Anywhere there’s water, there’s the possibility of life (bacteria, yeast, fungi), and without protection, your beautiful serum becomes a petri dish.
In this episode I walk you through the whole family of preservatives: the much-maligned parabens (and the small, flawed 2004 study that started two decades of panic), phenoxyethanol, organic acids, the allergy-triggering MIT, formaldehyde releasers, and the bio-fermented kimchi preservative I’ve fallen in love with. I’ll explain why packaging decides everything, why “paraben-free” is really just fearmongering, and why challenge testing is the real proof a product is safe. Preservatives don’t make skincare less pure, but make skincare possible.
