He Was a Great Marine—Until He Said He Was Leaving

OCT 19, 202623 MIN

Description

He knew his job. He led Marines. He exceeded the standard. Then he said he wasn’t reenlisting—and suddenly, leadership saw him differently. Did his performance change, or did their opinion of him? In this episode of the Meech Speaks Podcast, I talk about how we move the goalposts on good Marines: exceeding the standard becomes expected, meeting it becomes “the bare minimum,” and choosing to leave becomes a character flaw. I share a recruiting story about burnout, reflect on my own struggle to accept a solid Marine’s decision to get out, and challenge leaders to support the person—not just the career they want that person to have. Everybody doesn’t want to do twenty years. That doesn’t erase what they bring to the organization today. IN THIS EPISODE: • Meeting the standard versus cutting corners • How extra effort becomes the new expectation • Burning out the people who carry the team • “We both get paid the same”—and different career goals • Supporting good Marines who choose not to reenlist • Mentoring Marines toward their goals Did the way people treated you change after you said you were getting out?
