Welcome to another episode of Minds in Motion, directed by Dr. Sharifan! In this episode, we dive deep into the extraordinary, decades-long journey of biochemist Katalin Karikó, whose unwavering belief in messenger RNA (mRNA) technology ultimately revolutionized modern medicine.
For nearly thirty years, Karikó’s ideas were dismissed by her peers as a dead end. She faced a relentless stack of rejection letters, was passed over for faculty positions, and was demoted by her own university in 1995—all while battling a cancer diagnosis and coping with her husband being stuck overseas. Yet, instead of walking away, she chose to focus simply on the next experiment.
We trace her inspiring story from her childhood in Hungary watching her father work as a butcher, to smuggling her family's life savings inside a teddy bear to immigrate to the United States. We also explore the fateful 1997 meeting with immunologist Drew Weissman at a shared office photocopier—an accidental partnership that combined chemistry and immunology to crack mRNA's biggest roadblock. By replacing standard uridine with pseudouridine, they made synthetic mRNA invisible to the body's immune system, paving the way for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines that would save billions of lives.
Tune in as we reflect on what her 2023 Nobel Prize victory teaches us about institutional funding failures, the vital power of interdisciplinary collaboration, and why surviving the gap between being right and being recognized requires a relentless commitment to the work itself.
