UNSOLVED: Cindy James, Pt. 2
In Part 2 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy follows the two-week search for Cindy James and the autopsy that turned her case inside out. Her body was found on June 8th, 1989, behind an abandoned house three-quarters of a mile from her car, hands and feet bound behind her back with a black nylon stocking and another wound around her neck. She had no injuries at all, no bruising under any of the ligatures, and nothing around her suggested a struggle. Then the toxicology came back: two sedatives she had never been prescribed, dozens of capsules of one alone, and morphine at more than five times a lethal dose that has never been explained. At the inquest, a knot specialist tied his own neck, wrists and ankles in under three minutes, and the coroner's own psychiatrist testified he saw nothing in the evidence to suggest she had done this to herself. The jury chose neither suicide nor homicide, and because no police force can close an unknown event, Cindy James's file has never been closed. Please note, this episode contains discussion of suicide and may not be suitable for all audiences.Head over to our YouTube channel to WATCH our video episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@crimehousestudios If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow Murder: True Crime Stories to never miss a case! UNSOLVED: Cindy James, Pt. 1
In 1982, Cindy James was running a Vancouver treatment center for preschoolers with serious emotional and behavioral problems, and the two psychiatrists on staff reported to her. That October, months after leaving her sixteen-year marriage, the 38-year-old nurse called police to report obscene phone calls from a man who knew her name. She would call them close to a hundred more times over the next seven years. She hired a private detective she could not afford, moved six times, and legally changed her name. None of it stopped. On May 25th, 1989, Cindy deposited her paycheck at a Richmond bank machine and never made it home. In Part 1 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy traces the campaign of letters and fires that found her at every new address, the police officer who moved into her house twelve days after meeting her, and the doubt that crept into her case file until the people investigating her stopped believing her. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of sexual violence and discussion of suicidal ideation and may not be suitable for all audiences.Head over to our YouTube channel to WATCH our video episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@crimehousestudios If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow Murder: True Crime Stories to never miss a case! MYSTERY: The Dexter Killer of Edmonton
In October 2008, a 38-year-old Edmonton man named Johnny Altinger told friends he had a date with a woman he met on a dating site. He never came home. Altinger had been lured to a rented garage in Edmonton and murdered by Mark Twitchell, a filmmaker who weeks earlier had shot a short film about a man luring victims to a garage to kill them, and who was so fixated on the series Dexter that the press would name him for it. A week earlier, another man had been attacked in that garage and escaped. On Twitchell's laptop, police recovered a deleted document titled SKConfessions: a first-person account of both attacks, written in the voice of a serial killer. In this episode of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy examines the fake dating profile that lured Johnny Altinger, the earlier victim who got out of that garage alive, and the deleted document that prosecutors read to the jury at his murder trial as a confession dressed up as fiction. Please note, this episode contains descriptions of extreme violence and may not be suitable for all audiences.Head over to our YouTube channel to WATCH our video episodes: https://www.youtube.com/@crimehousestudios If you’re new here, don’t forget to follow Murder: True Crime Stories to never miss a case! UNSOLVED: Villisca Axe Murders Pt. 2
In Part 2 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy follows the decades of suspects, theories and trials that never produced a conviction for the Villisca axe murders. The investigation started with a crime scene hundreds of people had already walked through, and it never recovered from that. Private detectives, grand juries, a state senator and a traveling minister all became part of the case. The minister, Lyn George Jacklin Kelly, was tried twice for the murders: the first jury hung and the second acquitted him, and no one has been charged in the years since. Researchers have pointed to a run of axe killings along Midwestern rail lines in the same era as a possible connection, though nothing has ever tied any of them to the house on East Second Street. More than a century later, the Villisca axe murders remain officially unsolved, no one has been convicted, and eight people, six of them children, have never had an answer. 1
On the evening of June 9th, 1912, Josiah and Sarah Moore walked their four children home from a Children's Day program at the Presbyterian church in Villisca, Iowa. Two young sisters, Lena and Ina Stillinger, had been invited to stay the night. By the next morning all eight of them had been murdered with an axe in their beds while the small southwestern Iowa town slept, in what became known as the Villisca axe murders. Josiah ran the local farm implement dealership and Sarah had organized the church program that evening; the Moore children were 11, 10, 7 and 5. There was no forced entry, nothing of value taken, and no one who heard a sound. In Part 1 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy introduces the Moore family and the town where they were among the best known names, the night eight people were killed behind unlocked doors, and the crime scene that curious neighbors walked through for more than a day before the bodies were removed.
