Navigate The Day

A Hard Winter Training

Description

What if the difficult moments in our lives are not just obstacles to endure, but opportunities to prepare ourselves for whatever comes next? In this episode of Navigate the Day, I reflect on Epictetus’ idea of “hard winter training” and what it really means to prepare for hardship. Stoicism teaches that we shouldn’t wait until life becomes difficult to discover whether we have the patience, courage, discipline, and judgment to handle it. Those qualities have to be practiced beforehand. That idea led me to take an uncomfortable look at my own life. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how poorly I respond to frustration, uncertainty, loss, anger, and setbacks. I often tell myself that I’m prepared for difficult circumstances, only to realize that thinking about hardship and actually training for it are two very different things. I reflect on my struggles with holding grudges, judging others, accepting uncertainty, dwelling on the past, and avoiding the possibility of future pain. I also consider how easily I can resent difficult circumstances rather than recognizing them as opportunities to practice the qualities I claim to value. But perhaps preparation doesn’t mean predicting exactly what will happen to me. Maybe I don’t need to know what tomorrow’s challenge will look like. I need to become the kind of person who can meet whatever tomorrow brings with a little more wisdom, patience, courage, and self-control. After more than three years of journaling, I’m beginning to recognize that the practice itself may be part of my own winter training. I may not feel stronger than I was when I began, and I certainly haven’t mastered everything I’m trying to learn. But I’m still here, still reflecting, and still practicing. This episode is about recognizing that preparation doesn’t happen during the crisis. It happens in the ordinary moments before it—the small decisions, frustrations, disappointments, and opportunities to practice that we encounter every day.
