Dealing With Haters

Description

In this episode of Navigate the Day, I reflect on what it means to deal with people who dislike, criticize, or misunderstand me while still maintaining my own character. But as I worked through this idea, I realized that the most difficult “hater” I have to deal with may not be someone else at all. It may be the voice in my own head. I explore my tendency to criticize my own choices, question my progress, and hold myself to standards that I don't always extend to other people. I also consider the difference between talking about Stoicism and actually practicing it. I can understand these ideas intellectually and even give advice about them, but putting them into practice is a much more difficult challenge. At the same time, I find some evidence that change doesn't always happen in the dramatic ways I expect. Sometimes progress is as simple as sitting in traffic without losing my temper, continuing to show up when circumstances are frustrating, or recognizing that I don't have to respond to every irritation with anger. This episode is ultimately about learning to separate other people's behavior from my own character—and recognizing that the same principle applies to the way I treat myself. I may not be able to silence every critical thought or control what someone else thinks of me, but I can work on what I do with those thoughts and judgments. I'm still figuring out what I want from life, what principles I truly want to live by, and how to move forward when I don't have all the answers. But perhaps I don't need to have everything figured out before I take the next step. Someone else's hatred doesn't require me to become hateful. And maybe my own self-criticism doesn't have to prevent me from continuing forward either. Say Hello Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!
