Angels, Demons, and the UFO? Carlos Eire on religiosity and UAP

How should we understand the human inclination to interpret everything extraordinary under the lens of religious dogmatism? Can we prevent that collapse of categories when engaging the subject of UFOs and non-human intelligence? On this episode, I sit down with Carlos Eire, author of “They Flew:  A History of the Impossible,” and the T. L. Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University about his book, his sudden prominence in the UFO discussion, and the nature of human belief around extraordinary encounters and visionary experiences. We explore how Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, are beginning now to accommodate the UFO subject, and how that process is in some instances reducing down to the already known categories of angels and demons. We explore the work of author and religious studies scholar Diana Pasulka around the UFO subject, artificial intelligence and Christian dogma around the Anti-Christ, and explore how Eire himself sees the confluence of these two subject areas.
