Description
What happens when you can hold it together through the appointment, hospital corridor, or difficult service-system meeting — only to fall apart afterwards?
If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I so exhausted?” or “Why don’t I feel as sharp as I used to?”, this conversation is for you.
In this episode of **Nervous System Reset for Caregivers**, Michelle is joined by **Dr. Vanessa Labode-Richman**, clinical neuropsychologist and creator of the Forward Method, for an honest conversation about the hidden cognitive and emotional cost of caregiving.
Together, they explore the concept of *brain dollars”* — a simple way of understanding how every task, decision, emotional response, appointment, crisis and act of advocacy draws from a limited supply of mental and cognitive resources.
For caregivers, those withdrawals can happen constantly.
Michelle and Vanessa talk about why caregivers may move between feeling highly focused and urgently “on” and feeling completely fatigued, foggy and unable to find the right words. They also explore how chronic stress, grief, disrupted sleep and constant responsibility can affect attention, memory, emotional regulation and the ability to recover.
You’ll also hear why the crash after a hard appointment or hospital experience isn't necessarily a sign that you've failed. Sometimes, it’s what happens when your nervous system finally comes out of “hold it together” mode.
Vanessa introduces the **Forward Method**, a four-part framework for navigating difficult seasons:
F — Frame: Is this something to fix, face or forget?
O — Outlook: Remember that your brain is designed to adapt and find a way through.
U — Understand: Look beyond yourself and connect with knowledge, support and people who understand.
R — Reflect: Extract meaning and lessons from difficult experiences without turning pain into shame.
The conversation also explores grief and burnout, including the grief that can come from experiences we expected to have but never did, and why grief can resurface long after we thought we had dealt with it.
Rather than another message telling caregivers to simply “take a day off” or have a spa day, Michelle and Vanessa discuss **deliberate recovery** — small, realistic deposits that can support your brain and nervous system in the middle of real caregiving life.
And before the episode ends, Vanessa guides listeners through a simple practice designed to help bring the nervous system down **one notch**.
You don't have to be perfectly calm.
You don't have to do everything.
You don't have to get through hard seasons perfectly.
Sometimes one small deposit is enough for today.
