Episode 5: The Kingpin and the Con

Frank Lucas sold heroin. But his most profitable product may have been the myth. The legend is irresistible: a young man escapes the Jim Crow South, rises through Harlem's underworld, outsmarts the Mafia, imports pure heroin from Southeast Asia, and builds a multi-million-dollar empire called Blue Magic. Hollywood turned it into American Gangster. America turned it into folklore. But when we compare the legend to the record, the gaps become impossible to ignore. So why does the story persist? Because fear is valuable. Reputation is valuable. And the right myth can keep paying long after the empire collapses. This week, Nexus Crime Power Profit investigates Frank Lucas, the disputed coffin-smuggling story, the truth behind Blue Magic, and the extraordinary possibility that the most successful thing Frank Lucas ever trafficked wasn't heroin. It was belief. The empire is gone. The legend is still working. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Nexus: Crime, Power, Profit We analyze strategy. We don't celebrate crime.
