How to Shift Culture: Culture, Harm, & What Justice Actually Requires

OCT 10, 2026104 MIN

Description

If you have ever named a harm and been told you were “just doing it for attention,” you already know the move. The conversation stops being about the harm and starts being about you. This episode takes that move apart. Not as an insult, but as a mechanism; one that runs the same way whether it is a single conversation or an entire institution protecting itself. Using the tools of behavior analysis, I walk through how harm gets permitted, how the people who name it get recast as the problem, and why “we followed policy” can be technically true and still leave real people holding real damage. Along the way: what a behavior is actually for versus what it does to everyone else; why understanding why someone caused harm never makes the harm smaller; and a claim I have never heard my own field take credit for, that rights themselves are behavioral, something you can see in the pushback when they are violated. I use real cases, including one I lived through and one I can document start to finish. Some of it is personal. All of it is aimed at one question: what does justice actually look like for people who are harmed, over and over, by the systems that are supposed to protect them? I will not hand you the answer in the first five minutes. But I promise we end on something you can actually do. Content note: this episode discusses sexual assault and institutional harm. Be kind to yourself; take breaks if you need them. We end on action. Human first. Human always.
