X Minus One, “Universe,” originally broadcast May 15, 1955, is episode 4 of NBC Radio’s science-fiction anthology series. This adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s short story was written for radio by George Lefferts and directed by Fred Weihe. Cadet Hugh Hoyland, played by Donald Buka, has spent his entire life aboard a vast multilevel rocket ship whose people know no other home. When Hugh and his friend Alan Mahoney venture into the ship’s neglected upper levels, forbidden questions and unsettling encounters challenge the beliefs that govern their enclosed world.
