You’re probably not losing patients to your competition. You’re losing them to indecision. When a patient walks out of your clinic saying, “I’ll think about it,” we often assume they’ve rejected the treatment plan or they’re going somewhere else. But quite often, they haven’t said no at all. They simply haven’t decided. In this episode, I explain why podiatrists need to become better at helping patients move from uncertainty to action. I share my own experience of nearly buying a Weber BBQ, even at 10% off, and how a simple follow-up conversation from the store might have helped me decide. Your patients can be exactly the same. Cost, uncertainty, lack of urgency or unanswered questions can leave them sitting on the fence. I’ll share practical ways to improve your follow-up systems, ask better questions and uncover what’s really stopping a patient from moving forward. It’s about recognising that sometimes patients need a little more information, reassurance and guidance before they can confidently say yes. In this episode, I speak with David Allcock from Klinëtik Podiatry in Nova Scotia, Canada. Originally from Liverpool, David Allcock served in the British Army, worked on ambulances and eventually became a podiatrist after a friend submitted his university application, without his knowledge, after a few drinks one night out in Cape Town. It is one of the strangest ways I've heard of someone entering the profession, but for David, it was meant to be. David shares how his military mindset of “adapt and overcome” helped him navigate relocation, personal challenges and the journey into private practice. We discuss his four-day clinical working week, his focus on giving patients time and attention, and how relationships with other health professionals have helped his practice grow. We also explore his approach to custom orthotics, how climate and lifestyle shape patient presentations, and why the clinic environment matters. This is an honest, entertaining conversation about taking opportunities, backing yourself and building a practice that reflects your values. Whether you’re a recent graduate considering a move or a practice owner rethinking how you work, David’s story will give you plenty to consider, and a few laughs along the way. What does a podiatrist do as an expert witness, and how on earth do you become one? In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I’m joined by UK podiatrist Chelsea Tritschler, owner of Derriford Therapies, whose career has taken some fascinating turns. Chelsea originally started training as a nurse before discovering podiatry and changing direction. After graduating, she spent years carrying out home visits and working in care homes, as well as providing podiatry services inside three prisons in Devon. Chelsea completed a Master’s degree in forensic podiatry, where she studied areas including footprints, footwear, wear patterns and forensic evidence. When opportunities in criminal forensic podiatry weren’t readily available where she lived, she found another way to use that knowledge and became an expert witness. Today, alongside running and growing her own podiatry practice, Chelsea provides independent podiatry opinions in civil legal cases. We talk about what expert-witness work actually involves, why an expert’s duty is to the court rather than the person paying them, and the pressure that can sometimes come with preparing reports. Chelsea also shares one lesson every podiatrist should pay attention to: your clinical notes matter. She regularly reviews cases where the podiatrist may have provided perfectly good treatment, but poor documentation makes it difficult to demonstrate exactly what happened and why particular clinical decisions were made. We also discuss opening a podiatry business without much business experience, getting help from a business coach, becoming an employer, and finding different interests within podiatry that keep your career fresh. Chelsea’s story reminds us that your podiatry degree doesn’t have to take you down one predictable road. Sometimes the interesting stuff happens when you take a turn you weren’t expecting.
