Recovering From 10+ Years of Bad Advice

How do you separate someone's poor advice from the heart of God? And after years of trying, failing, and feeling misunderstood, how do you find the courage to ask for help again? From first opening up about pornography as a teenager, to the advice we received while dating, in premarital counseling, and eventually in the aftermath of betrayal, we kept reaching out for help. And much of the advice came from people we respected and trusted. “Just stop.” “Read your Bible more.” “Pray harder.” “Once you’re married, sex will take care of it.” “Have more sex.” “Maybe you’re not really saved.” And when their advice didn't work, we didn't immediately question the advice—we questioned ourselves. If bad advice has left you feeling ashamed, angry, confused, or even distant from God, we hope this conversation reminds you that you don't have to give up. There is still hope.
