What happens when Jesus becomes a tool rather than the foundation of our lives? That is the uncomfortable question at the heart of this message drawn from Colossians 1:15-23. We live in a culture that trains us to ask 'what is in it for me?' about everything, and if we are not careful, that same lens gets applied to our faith. The result is a version of Jesus shaped around our priorities rather than one we actually submit to. Paul's great poem about Christ in Colossians 1 pushes back hard against that tendency. It presents Jesus not as a supporting character in our story but as the one who is before all things, the creator and sustainer of everything visible and invisible, and the head of the church. If even half of what Paul claims here is true, it demands that we stop and genuinely reckon with who Jesus is. This is an invitation to discover what it means to let him occupy first place in everything.

What does it look like when a community of believers holds fast to their faith in the middle of loss, hardship, and uncertainty? That is exactly the question we explore as we open Paul's letter to the Colossians. This small, overlooked city had seen its best days come and go. Trade had moved elsewhere, and an earthquake had leveled much of what remained. Yet the church there had become, by every spiritual measure, a giant. Their love for one another was so well known that word of it traveled hundreds of miles. Paul's opening words in Colossians 1:1-14 reveal something profound about the nature of genuine faith: it is not measured by comfort or prosperity, but by the fruit it produces under pressure. Love, Paul reminds us, is the clearest evidence that the Holy Spirit is alive and active in a community. And that love, we learn, is anchored not in present circumstances but in a future hope, a guaranteed inheritance that frees us to be generous, patient, and outward-focused right now. As we begin this journey through Colossians together, we are invited to ask ourselves whether our own faith is producing that same kind of visible, overflowing love, and whether our eyes are fixed on the hope that makes such love possible.

What if a single line of prayer contained more depth than we could unpack in a lifetime? That is exactly what we discover when we slow down and sit with the words 'give us this day our daily bread.' This message takes us on a journey through the full sweep of Scripture, from the manna God rained down on a hungry and complaining Israel in the wilderness, to Jesus declaring himself the Bread of Life, to the broken bread at the Last Supper and the moment two disciples recognized the risen Christ in the breaking of bread on the road to Emmaus. Bread, it turns out, is one of the most loaded and layered symbols in all of Scripture. Every time we pray these words, we are invited to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus, to reorient ourselves around the Word of God as our true sustenance, and to resist the temptation to look backward toward the comforts of our old lives when the wilderness feels long. The prayer is not just a request for physical provision. It is a daily reset, a returning to the source of everything we truly need. And because Jesus gave it to us as a daily prayer, it is a reminder that we need this reorientation not once a week, not occasionally, but every single day.

What does it really mean to pray 'lead us not into temptation'? This part of the Lord's Prayer is one of the most misunderstood and most underestimated petitions we can bring before God. At its heart, it is not a prayer for the weak or the struggling. It is a prayer for anyone who has ever looked at their own life and assumed they had things under control. Through the stories of Peter and Hezekiah, we are reminded that the moments we feel most secure are often the moments we are most exposed. Peter declared he would never fall away, and hours later he wept bitterly in a courtyard. Hezekiah survived armies and illness only to stumble when pride crept in. These are not cautionary tales about bad people. They are mirrors held up to show us something true about all of us. When we pray this petition, we are not admitting defeat. We are reaching up like a child in a busy parking lot, trusting that the Father's grip is stronger than our own confidence. That is not weakness. That is wisdom.
