Did you know that every fetus starts in a default female state, regardless of chromosomes? I was fascinated to learn this from my recent guest, Dr. Diana Sorrentino, founder of The Paradoxes of Gender and author of two books on transgender topics. Dr. D, as she is known in the community, explained how the brain's gender identity is established before birth. Here’s a mind-blowing fact: it's not testosterone itself that masculinizes a male brain in the womb. Testosterone is converted into estrogen, and it’s this estrogen that acts on the brain. Researchers have now identified over 21 genetic variants in 19 different genes that can influence this prenatal brain development. This means for some people, the brain develops along a different path than their physical anatomy. It’s a powerful reminder that gender identity is a matter of biology, not choice.
