Friday Drop: Leave the Bench Behind | Ruck’s Place Podcast
What happens when the version of you that got you here is no longer the version of you that can take you where you want to go?
In this Friday Drop, I take you back to my humble beginnings in Michigan, growing up in an environment where college degrees weren't valued, resources were limited, and the people around me weren't necessarily talking about a different future. Some of the people I grew up with are no longer here. Others remain in the same environment I was determined to escape. I knew I wanted something different. I was depressed, struggling to find my way, and determined not to become another statistic in the neighborhood.
Then came a decision that changed the direction of my life. My older brother came home with a plan for us to move to California and live with our father. We sold a cockatiel to a drug dealer, bought Greyhound tickets, and headed toward a new beginning.
What awaited me was a completely different world. I found myself surrounded by young people producing music for major record labels and artists, working from beautiful homes with breathtaking views. My brother and I eventually ventured into producing clothing for stars, television shows, and music videos. Even after losing that business, I found myself experiencing opportunities I once only watched on television from Michigan.
But a new environment doesn't mean a life without obstacles. Every new level comes with new lessons, setbacks, and pain. I've had to persevere, adapt, and keep moving toward the goals that still live in my heart.
Today, I have a life I'm grateful for, a 28-year marriage, a beautiful family, a home, cars, and experiences I once could only imagine. And I still have bigger dreams — from building my first million to creating $5 million, $10 million, and ultimately the $50 million vision that continues to drive me.
My mission through Ruck's Place Podcast is to help others get unstuck, leave the bench they've been sitting on, and start moving toward the life they actually desire.
Because the bench isn't always a physical place. Sometimes it's a mindset, an environment, a relationship with your past, or a version of yourself you've outgrown.
If you want to gain something different, you have to be willing to go through something different. And sometimes, in order to gain, you have to endure some pain.
It's time to leave the bench behind.
